What are “Select” teams?

In youth sports across the United States and Canada, a “select team” refers to a roster made up of the strongest players chosen from a larger pool of participants. These teams typically compete at a higher level than recreational leagues and often participate in regional tournaments or advanced travel competitions.

Select teams are common in sports such as soccer, baseball, hockey, volleyball, and basketball. Players usually try out for these teams, and coaches build rosters based on skill level, positional needs, and long-term development potential.

Unlike recreational leagues where participation is open to most players, select teams emphasize competition and training. Athletes may practice more frequently, travel for tournaments, and face opponents from other cities or regions.

For many young athletes, select teams serve as a bridge between casual youth participation and elite club or high school competition.
